FLAME HARDENERS LTD
was registered as a Company in 1945, our
story begins even earlier than this.
FLAME HARDENERS LTD was originally "The Shorter Processing Company"
taking the name of the pioneer of surface hardening in Great Britain, Mr Albert
Edward Shorter (inventor of the technique to become known as "Shorterising").
"Shorterising" is a technique of progressively heating and quenching
the surface of a component initially developed in the hardening of parts for military
vehicles.
The Shorter Processing Company manufactured machinery to harden
components. It was bought by the British Oxygen Co. who saw the machinery as a valuable
outlet for the gas produced by them. A demonstration unit was
created to harden sample components, by default this unit became a sub-contract
heat treatment operation. Retaining the rights to the machinery design BOC sold
The Shorter Processing Company in 1945.
The Shorter
Processing Company was re-named Flame Hardeners Ltd.
Induction Hardening was also becoming a popular process and equipment was installed
to service this market leading to the formation of Induction Hardeners Ltd
which
was later incorporated into Flame Hardeners Ltd.
